A special day in the music world

I heard the story of The Clash when listening to 89.7 WTMD, then saw a few musicians' birthdays pop up on Instagram later that same day. So, I decided to do some Google searches and share some fun facts that took place on June 10th through the years.

Kim and Kelley Deal celebrate their birthdays

Born on June 10th, 1961, the twin sisters are known for rocking the stage in their band, The Breeders. To celebrate their 30th anniversary of "Last Splash", we got the chance to see them live at The Filmore Silver Spring on September 21st, 2023 with support from The Screaming Females, who announced their split shortly after in December 2023 after 18 years. The band sounded just like their record after all of those years. They were laughing and smiling while playing to the packed audience. Kim Deal, if you didn't know already, was also the original bassist and co-vocalist in...you guessed it! The Pixies. Happy Birthday to Kim & Kelley and thank you for sharing your talent with the world!

Joey Santiago celebrates his Birthday

Another Pixies member, Joey Santiago, celebrated his birthday this June 10th. He is the co-founder and lead guitarist of the Pixies, which he founded with Black Francis after dropping out of university. Did you know Kim Deal showed up to their audition for a bassist without ever playing before?

Joe Strummer & Topper Headon fined - 1977

The two bandmates were fined $8 for spray painting "The Clash" on a wall. Around the time of my first show playing bass, a short interview with the Clash started playing on Spotify and I revisit those words a lot. You can listen to the interview on Youtube as well, which I recommend.

Jimmy Chamberlin celebrates his 60th birthday

Born on June 10th, 1964, James Joseph Chamberlin is the drummer of the Smashing Pumpkins. After he saw the group playing live with a drum machine, Jimmy Chamberlin was introduced through a mutual friend and went on to become “one of the most powerful drummers in rock.”

Listen to "Jennifer Ever" 42:14. This is my first time hearing this song...I cannot stop playing it.

"Little Creatures" By Talking Heads Released - 1985

My favorite song on this album is "And She Was," linked below, and I listen to it regularly. “Creatures of Love” was the band’s first country song and the album successfully sold more than 2 million copies.

The first official rock festival - 1967

Just north of San Francisco, tens of thousands fans participated in the first rock festival, called The Fantasy Fair. Imagine that. The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, and Sons of Champlin took the stage among other bands, and tickets were priced at just $2 for the weekend. That's equivalent to roughly $18 today. Will we ever see ticket prices that feasible ever again? The Monterey Pop Festival took place the following weekend and is often given credit as the first rock festival, with acts such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Janis Joplin, Ottis Redding, Canned Heat, Simon & Garfunkel, and the Mamas and the Papas playing for a much larger crowd, around 200,000 people.

Stevie Wonder Releases "I Was Made to Love Her" - 1967

With the help of his mother, Lula Mae Hardway, Sylvia Moy, and producer Henry Cosby, wrote the song, which peaked at No. 2 on The Billboard Pop Single Charts the following month, right behind "Light My Fire" by the Doors. Sylvia Moy was the first woman at Motown Records to write and produce for the acts and continued to write with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston, The Isley Brothers, Martha & the Vandellas, and Michael Jackson throughout her career.
